- ما يدور من مشادّة ونفور بين الحركات العلمانيّة والحركات الإسلاميّة، والعوامل المانعة لنشوء حالة مدنيّة فاعلة في ظلّ هيمنة الإسلام السياسيّ.
- استعصاء قيام كيان عربيّ واحد قياساً على تجربة الوحدة بين مصر وسوريا، ما أدّى إلى انتقال التوجّه العربيّ نحو البحث عن أعداء افتراضيّين بدلاً من الأعداء الحقيقيّين، وهو مسار ما زال سارياً ومتفاقماً.
- أزمة الحرب والسلم مع إسرائيل، ومن ضمنها حروب الناصريّة والبعث والقوى الإسلاميّة في ما بينها ومع الآخرين. ويناقش الكتاب في جزء منه هذه الإشكاليّة من خلال التناقض الحادّ الذي نضحت به مقالات الكاتب محمّد حسنين هيكل في جريدة «الأهرام» المصريّة، بين دفاعه الموارب عن التوجّه الناصريّ إلى السلام، وبين تأكيده أنّ «من لا يريد محاربة إسرائيل فإنّه يريد حرباً أهليّة بين العرب».
