لقد أحدثت التطورات التكنولوجية الأخيرة، تغييراً في كثير من المفاهيم التربوية السائدة، طالت النظم الإدارية، وبناء المناهج الدراسية، والبرامج التدريبية، بل ظهر من ينادي بمراجعة الشكل القائم للمدرسة، ومن يجادل بضرورة وجودها، في ظل وجود طرق المعلومات السريعة، ونظم الإتصال عبر الأقمار الصناعية، والملتيميديا (البرامج التي تجمع بين الصوت والصورة والرسم والنص مع وجود تفاعل بين المشاهدين)، والهايبرميديا (تصميم جديد للكمبيوتر التعليمي متعدد الوسائط يتيح للمتعلم مزايا متعددة: نصوص مكتوبة، رسائل سمعية، رسومات ساكنة أو متحركة، صور ساكنة أو متحركة)، والصفوف، والمعامل الإفتراضية، وما إلى ذلك من مفاهيم تقنية جديدة.
ولذلك، فإن تكنولوجيا التعليم علم متجدد، لا يقف عند حدود إستخدام الأجهزة التعليمية وصيانتها، بل أنه يتأثر بالتغيرات النظرية التي تواجه المجال وتطبيقاته، ولهذا كان التطور في مجال تقنيات التعليم موازياً للتطورات في النظريات ذات العلاقة، والمتتبع للتغيرات التي طرأت على تعريفات المجال منذ العشرينات، حتى الآن يلحظ كيف تأثر المجال بالتحولات النظرية من مدرسة علم النفس السلوكية، إلى المدرسة الإدراكية، إلى المدرسة البنيوية.
وهذا الكتاب جاء محاولة من المؤلف لإعطاء صورة واضحة عن تكنولوجيا التعليم من خلال ثلاث أبواب: الباب الأول: تكنولوجيا التعليم، الباب الثاني: تكنولوجيا التعليم والوسائل التعليمية، الباب الثالث: تكنولوجيا التعليم الإلكتروني.
لقد حاول المؤلف أن يقدم مادة علمية ميسرة للطالب الجامعي على وجه الخصوص، ليخرج بثروة علمية، توضح له مدى أهمية تكنولوجيا التعليم في كافة مجالات الحياة.
