يرسم محمد جعفر علي عالمه الشعري من أقصى مكان في المخيلة، وتحليق للذات في عوالم موغلة بالحلم، وبلغة تشد إليها صوراً متتابعة للتعبير عن التوحد بالمرأة / الحبيبة، مشحونة بالدلالات الحميمة، في "سكون الحلم" يقول: "عند النوم / صوتان يكسر صغيرها ... / سكون الحلم / الرغبة والضمير ".
من جماليات النص الشعري عند محمد جعفر علي، الهدف الإمتاعي للغة، والتآلف بين العناصر والتراكيب المرصوفة بحرفية خاصة، والحسن الفني العميق، والإمتلاك الواضح لعناصر الشعرية الجديدة، ما يعني التقريب بين المتخيل والواقعي في العلاقة مع الشعر .. لا أعلم لماذا ولكن / الشعر عندي خاصم المواضيع كلها / إلا أنتِ / تلك التي كانت زادي / فأيُّ لعنةٍ تلك التي تحركني". هذا السبك الصنعوي المائز يطغى عليه عنصر التصوير الذي سوف ينحرف بالمفردات عن معناها المعجمي إلى عوالم أخرى جديدة، تُجمل عناصر (الحلم) وتشحنها بالجماليات التي لم تكن فيها في واقع الأمر، فالأحلام نحن من نخترعها، ونصورها على وفق ما نهواه. وهذه حال الشعراء يتغلبون بالشعر على وطأة الحاضر الثقيلة.
يضم الديوان "سكون الحلم" عدداً من القصائد في الشعر العربي الحديث، من العناوين نذكر: "بين الرغبة والواجب" ، "وقت القطاف" ، "طمع" ، "قطع الطريق" ، "شعرك" ، "إلتماس الذكرى" ، "نواقيس الشوق" ، "فرّقُ جمالك" ، "إغفال الهواجس" ، سر انقلاب الماء" (...) وقصائد أخرى.
