جاء هذا الكتاب نتيجة لاهتمام المؤلفين "فرد أبات"، "روز ماري ما كما هون" بتدريس العاملين الصحيين في بلاد عديدة ومشاركتهما في هذا التدريس. وهو يهدف إلى مساعدة المدرسيين على إعادة النظر في مجمل طرق معالجتهم لقضية التدريب، وهكذا يتم التغلب على مواضع النقد هذه. ويصف فصلاه الأول والثاني خلفية الرعاية الصحية الأولية كما يصفان دور المدرس.
وتبين الفصول 3-6 من الكتاب كيف يستطيع المدرس أن يكون أكثر دقة فيما يرغب بتدريسه لتلامذته. ولهذا تم اقتراح تقنية "تحليل المهمات وهذا يؤدي إلى تمييز واضح بين الأنماط المختلفة للأشياء التي يجب تعليمها من معرفة ومواقف ومهارات الاتصال واتخاذ القرارات، والمهارات اليدوية والدوافع النفسية, ويرى هذا التحديد لما يتوجب تعلمه القاعدة لتخطيط البرامج الشاملة للدورات، كما يؤمن الإعداد لتقييم الطلاب واختيار طرق التدريس.
وقد تم وصف جميع العمليات في الفصول السابع والثامن والتاسع، بعد ذلك تم شرح الطرق التعليمية الأكثر مناسبة لكل مجال من مجالات التعلم الخمسة وتدعيم ذلك بالأمثلة المحددة في الفصل 10إلى 14. وهناك فصل أخير يبحث في تقييم الدورات. ويعني هذا الكتاب أن المدرسين سيقضون وقتاً أقل في التدريس أو أن عملهم سيكون أسهل. إذ بدلاً من ذلك يأمل المؤلفان أن يجد المدرسون عملهم أكثر إرضاءاً لهم وأكثر تنوعاً، وأن يتعلم الطلاب بسرعة أكبر وأن يكون التلاميذ مؤهلين ليؤمنوا نوعية أفضل من الرعاية الصحية.
