بات جلياً أنّه مع نهاية القرن العشرين لم تعد العلوم المعنية بدراسة المجتمع والثقافة، هي ذاتها تلك العلوم السابقة، لا من حيث نظرياتها ولا موضوعاتها.
لقد جرت، على سبيل المثال، مياه كثيرة تحت جسور علوم الأنثروبولوجيا، وقد ترتب على جريان تلك المياه أن تغيرت تلك الموضوعات التقليدية التي كانت تقوم بدراستها، وحلت بدلاً عنها موضوعات جديدة فرضتها التغييرات الإجتماعية والإقتصادية السياسية المحلية منها والأخرى الكونية.
فقد طالت تلك التغييرات العديد من المجتمعات والثقافات في العالم، ولم تكن منطقة الخليج العربي إستثناءً عن مسار تلك التغييرات، وهكذا تعرضت جوانب عديدة من الثقافة والمجتمع الخليجي لتغييرات تفاوتت من حيث الحدة والإتساع، فقد بدأت، على سبيل المثال، تطل على الحياة العامة مظاهر ثقافية شديدة التأثير في البنى الإجتماعية والثقافية، واستطاع بعضٌ من تلك التغييرات أن يصيب جوانب أساسية من الهوية الوطنية والثقافية، لذلك أصبح من غير المعقول والمنطقي أن لا تُعبر الدراسات الأنثروبولوجية تلك التغييرات الأهمية العلمية اللازمة.
تضم دفتا هذا الكتاب (الخليج العربي: دراسات أنثروبولوجية) نتاج دراسات حقلية إثنوغرافية قام بها المؤلف في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة وبلده مملكة البحرين، وأخرى كذلك عن تجربته بصفته أنثروبولوجياً، سواء في عمله الأكاديمي او إدارته للعمل الثقافي الرسمي، كما يضم الكتاب دراسات أخرى يتناول فيها المؤلف بالنقد والتحليل كتابات زملائه من الأنثروبولوجيين الأوروبيين والأكاديميين العرب عن الثقافة والمجتمع في الخليج العربي...
يأمل المؤلف أن تقدم الدراسات المنشورة في الكتاب منظوراً مغايراً لواقع الثقافة والمجتمع في الخليج العربي، وأن تكرس تعاملاً نقدياً بين الشرق والغرب وأيضاً في تواصلهما الثقافي، وذلك من خلال إخضاع النتاج الفكري والعلمي لكلا الطرفين لعملية نقدية متبادلة، تسهم في محصلتها النهائية في تطور المنظور الإنساني للعلوم الإجتماعية والإنسانية.
