نظراً إلى انتشار ظاهرة العنف السياسي في العديد من النظم العربية، ونظراً إلى الآثار والتداعيات السلبية التي تتركها هذه الظاهرة في الاستقرار السياسي والتنمية... نظراً إلى ذلك تأتي أهمية دراسة موضوع العنف السياسي في النظم العربية التي تضمها هذا الكتاب والتي جاءت في هذا الإطار والتي سعت إلى الأمور التالية:
1-رصد وتحديد أشكال العنف السياسي الأكثر تكراراً في النظم العربية، وتفسير ذلك. 2-تحديد معدلات تكرار أحداث العنف السياسي ودرجات شدتها في النظم العربية؛ مع المقارنة بين تلك النظم من زاوية تزايد أو تناقص العنف السياسي من حيث الكم والكيف. 3-رصد وتحديد القوى السياسية والاجتماعية التي مارست العنف السياسي غير الرسمي في النظم الغربية خلال فترة الدراسة. 4-رصد وتتبع اتجاهات حركة العنف السياسي فيما بين النظم العربية، ومن هذا المنطلق يمكن رسم خريطة للعلاقات العربية-العربية، وتحديد بؤر ومصادر واتجاهات التوتر والصراع في المنطقة العربية. 5-تحديد وتحليل طبيعة العلاقة بين العنف الرسمي والعنف غير الرسمي في النظم العربية. 6-أخيراً، تفسير ظاهرة العنف السياسي في النظم العربية، وذلك من خلال اختبار عدد من الفرضيات التي تتضمن علاقات ارتباطية (إيجابية وسلبية) بين العنف السياسي وعددٍ من المتغيرات الأخرى المفسرة له. وهي: التنمية الاقتصادية، والتعبئة الاجتماعية، وعدم العدالة التوزيعية، وعدم التكامل الوطني، والتبعية الاقتصادية.
