يحتوي كتاب نسب معد واليمن الكبير لابن الكلبي على ما جاء لدى علماء النسب قبله، وهو مثل غيره من الكتب العظيمة، دون في بداية عصر التدوين مع تأسيس الخلافة العباسية، فكان الينبوع الذي نهل منه كل مؤرخ وعالم أنساب، فاعتمد عليه الطبري وأخذ منه البلاذري كثيراً في كتابه أنساب الأشراف. وأصبح جميع من جاؤوا من بعده عيالاً عليه. ولهذا حظي كتاب ابن الكلبي بمكانة قل أن يحظى بمثلها كتاب عربي آخر واهتم به الباحثون قديماً وحديثاً. والكتاب بخط اليد لما فيه من جمال ووقع أكبر في النفس ولصعوبة ضبط الشكل واستحالة تصحيح الكلمات والشكل وهذا أقرب ما يكون للصحة.
ويحتوي الجزء الأول من الكتاب: على ولد ربيعة بن نزار بن معد بن عدنان إلى بنو إياد بن نزار بن معد ونسب قحطان ونسب كندة ونسب بحتر بن عتود . ويحتوي الجزء الثاني : جمهرة نسب الازد و نسب الأنصار وهم من غسان و نسب الخزرج ونسب خزاعة ونسب حاشد بن جشم ونسب قضاعة.
أما الجزء الثالث فيحتوي على نسب بهراء ونسب مهرة ومهرة وعذرة وجهينة و مجموعة من لوحات متعددة تحتوي نسب معد واليمن الكبير وهي مائة وسبعة وخمسون لوحة. ويحتوي الجزء أيضاً على فهارس لكل من: اللوحات، الأعلام، الأماكن والبلدان، الأمم والقبائل والجماعات والشعوب، الأشعار، الرجاز، أنصاف الأبيات، التصويب والاستدراكات.
