حظي كتاب "جهود النسب" لابن الكلبي لصيت ذائع، وشهرة واسعة، لم يسبقه إليها في الأنساب سابق، ولم يلحق به لتعزوه فيما احتواه لاحق، بل يمكن القول، أنه الكتاب الوحيد الذي كان وسيبقى معوّلاً عليه عند أهل العلم بالأنساب، مهما تتابعت الأيام، وتبدّلت الأزمان، وتوالت العصور، فلا عيب أن يصبح مورد الناسبين ومنهلهم، ومرجع المؤرخين ومصدرهم، فعلى خطاه جرت أنسابهم، وبما ضمه امتلأت مضلتهم ومؤلفاتهم، حتى جعل أهل التراجم وأصحاب الطبقات علماً يهتدون به.
هذا الكتاب الذي يعدّ عمود النسب، وسفره العظيم لم يسلم، شأن غيره مما سطرته أقلام علمائنا الآخرين، من عداوة الزمن، حيث نعى إلى زمن بعيد عن أنظار الباحثين إلى أن قيّض الله له الدكتور ناجي حسن حيث أزاح عنه غبار السنين، وقام بتحقيق القسم الأولمنه، إلا أنه ظلّ في بحثٍ مستمد عن القسم الثاني إلى أن عثر على مخطوط لابن الكلبي في مكتبة دير الإسكوربال في بلاد الأندلس، والمخطوط عبارة عن سفر كبير يحمل عنوان "نسب معد واليمن الكبير"، وعند وعند تقليب أوراقه مرارا وتكراراً أيقن الدكتور حسن بأن هذا السفر هو بغيته، خاصة وهو يتضمن بشكل مفصل أنساب القطانين، ذلك الجزء الذي عفي أثره من كتاب ابن الكليب الجمهرة.
من هذا كله يمكن القول بأن الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يشكل بديلاً للقسم المفقود من الجمهرة، ومما يعزز ويؤدي ما ذهب إليه الدكتور حسن، هو أن ترتب الإنسان فيه لا يختلف عن أسلوب ابن الكلبي وطريقته التي نسلكها في الجمهرة، وكذلك النهج الذي تبناه في عرض الأنساب وتبويبها، إلى جانب أن ترتيب الأنساب فيه لا يختلف كثيراً عما احتواه وتضمنه كتاب "المغتصب" وكتاب "الفهرست" لابن النديم، وكتاب ابن دريد "الاشتقاق"، وكذلك ما تضمنه كتاب "الأحبة في تميز الصحابة" لابن حجر العسقلاني من معلومات وإشارات كثيرة استقاها من حميدة الأنساب، ونبّهإليها، حيث هي موجودة مفصلة في هذا الكتاب "نسب معد واليمن الكبير".
