انطلقت في هذا الكتاب، من واقع الجنوب اللبناني في تطوره منذ السيطرة العثمانية وحتى وقتنا الحاضر، لتبين بشكل مقتضب، كيف أن هذا الواقع شكل بيئة طاردة لسكن هذه المنطقة، على نطاق محدود بادئ الأمر، ثم على نطاق واسع في أيامنا هذه. وقمت بعد ذلك برصد شامل ومفصل لما ترتب على هذه الظاهرة، في ظل النظام اللبناني السياسي والاقتصادي المشوه، من مفاعيل اقتصادية واجتماعية. والخلاصة التي توصلت إليها بهذا الخصوص هي أنه على الصعيد الاقتصادي، جرى توظيف غير متوازن للعائدات المالية من الهجرة. فكانت حصة الأسد لقطاع الخدمات ولم تحظ الزراعة سوى بالنذر القليل، أما نصيب الصناعة فلامس الصفر. على الصعيد الاجتماعي ساهمت الهجرة إلى حد بعيد في إفلات المجتمع الجنوبي من عقاله التقليدي من خلال ما ينتج منها من ارتفاع الانفاق الاستهلاكي والتوسع في العمل الخيري الاجتماعي. فتحسنت كثيراً الأوضاع الاجتماعية والصحية والسكنية وغيرها.
هذا وقد استندت في تحليلي لمفاعيل الهجرة الجنوبية المختلفة بشكل رئيسي، إلى المعطيات التي جمعتها من المعاينات الميدانية والكثير من المقابلات التي أجريتها مع أبرز الشخصيات الاغترابية وغير الاغترابية بالإضافة إلى نتائج الاستمارات التي نفذتها لدى مغتربين في مختلف القرى والمدن الجنوبية وبخاصة تلك التي تنتشر فيها ظاهرة الهجرة على نطاق واسع.
