لقد كانت الإصدارات الروائية السعودية، على مدى ستين عاماً (1930- 1990م)، تسير بإيقاع بطيء، بما يتوافق مع إيقاع مجتمعها الساكن ظاهرياً، وظلت تطل إطلالات متباعدة، بمعدل رواية كل عام، ولا تترك أثراً ظاهراً، فيما عدا بعض روايات قليلة.
وهذا الأمر تغير جذرياً في المرحلة الثانية (1990- 2006م)؛ وبعد أن عصفت بالبلاد أحداث متوالية، حركت التراكمات الداخلية، وتزامنت مع تزايد تأثيرات العولمة، وإتساع نطاق ثورة الإتصالات، وتدفق المعلومات، مما ساهم في تغيير بعض المفاهيم القديمة، وتَأثُر الداخل المحلي بإيقاع الأحداث المتسارعة.
صارت طبيعة المرحلة تستدعي أداءً ثقافياً مختلفاً، والرواية بطبيعتها الجنسُ الأدبي الذي يستجيب - بصورة أسرع وأوضح - للمتغيرات الكبيرة، بل إن درجة تسارع الأحداث جعلت الرواية ذاتها تبدو ثقيلة الحركة أحياناً، وتكاد تفقد حتى هذه الميزة التقليدية، فنشأ نوع من التعويض بالتكاثر الكمي، وصار التعويض يتزايد بإضطراد، إلى أن وصل عدد الروايات في عام (2006م)، إلى (49) رواية، بمعدلٍ يقارب رواية كل أسبوع، وبالتساوي تقريباً بين الرجال: (26) رواية، والنساء، (23) رواية.
في هذا الكتاب دراسة شاملة، عن هذه الطفرة الروائية في السعودية، جاءت في مقدمة، وتمهيد، وقسمين، يتضمنان أربعة فصول ثم الخاتمة، والمراجع، على النحو التالي: تمهيد: يركز على المتغيرات الجديدة، وأثرها في تطور الإنتاج الروائي، والرواية وموقعها من خطاب الواقع، القسم الثاني: المتن الروائي، ويتناول هذا القسم القضايا الفكرية والثقافية والإجتماعية، التي يقاربها الرواية في هذه المرحلة، ويُلاحِظ أن مجمل مضامين الروايات تدور داخل محورين كبيرين هما: وعي الذات، والقيم المتحولة.
القسم الثاني: البِنى الروائية، ويبحث هذا القسم في الأشكال الروائية، ووظائفها الدلالية العامة، مثل الشكل السيري، وما ينطوي عليه من تفريغ الذاكرة وإراحتها، وإستدعاء المغيب من التاريخ الإجتماعي، ونزعات الشهادة على العصر، والإنتماء المشروط من جهة، ومحاولة تأكيد الإنتماء من جهة أخرى، والرغبة في التميز وتحقيق الذات، وخاتمة: تلخص أهم نتائج الدراسة.
