هذا الكتاب معدٌّ للتدريس وهو يعتمد على الطريقة البحثيّة في تحصيل المطالب التي يتصدّى لها، وموضوعه هو علم الكلام الجديد (فلسفة الدين). وما عُرِف بين المسلمين، بعلم الكلام على الأقلّ في القرن الثاني الهجريّ، هو علم يتولّى شرح المعتقدات الإسلاميّة وإثباتها والدفاع عنها.
وقد أخذ هذا العلم أسماء أخرى غير اسم علم الكلام مثل: «الفقه الأكبر» في مقابل الفقه الأصغر الذي يتولّى بيان التكاليف العملية وكلّ ما يرتبط بفروع الدين، كما عُرِف ب «علم التوحيد والصفات»، و«علم أصول الدين»، وهذه التسميات المتعدّدة تكتسب مبرّرها من الموضوعات التي يعالجها هذا العلم وهي البحث في العقيدة الإسلامية، و«أصول الدين»، وعلى رأسها مسألة التوحيد وصفات الله تعالى.
