يتناول هذا الكتاب جانباً مهماً من فكر وحياة شيخ الإسلام (ابن تيمية) وهو الجانب الروحي المتزن، والذي يتمثل بصلة العبد بربه من خلال ما أقرَّه وبيَّنه الشرع الحنيف. وموقف الشيخ من التصوف يدل على سلامة تفكيره، ورجاحة عقله، وغزارة علمه، وسعة صدره. فقد فصل بين التصوف كسبيل وبين الصوفية كسالكين، فاعتبرهم مجتهدين في طاعة الله: فيهم السابق المُقرَّب، وفيهم المقتصد، وفيهم مَنْ يُذنب، فيتوب، أو لا يتوب، ومن المنتسبين إليهم مَنْ هو ظالم لنفسه، عاص لربه. فقد كان هَمُّ الشيخ دائماً أن يعيد أمر الدين كما بيَّنه النبي الكريم، دون غلو، أو تحريف، أو ابتداع.
