إن ذكرى نهضة الإمام الحسين (رضي الله عنه) بما إنطوت عليه من عبر وعظات. وما من حوته من فضائل ومناقب، ما تزال من أروع الدروس لمن يريد أن يعرف الحياة والسعادة والفضيلة وكذلك الشهادة، ويطالب بها في سبيل الحق. والشعراء هم أكثر الناس القادرين عن التعبير عن تلك المعاني السامية وهو الشيء الهام الذي أكد عليه مؤلف الكتاب الدكتور كامل سلمان الجبوري في معرض تعريفه لهذا العمل بقوله: "... إن محاربة الرذيلة، وإحياء الفضيلة، ومساندة العقيدة الصحيحة، هو ما يهدف إليه هذا الإصدار الخاص بالإمام الحسين (رضي الله عنه) الذي تعالج قرائح شعرائه المحترمين، هذه النواحي العزيزة على الحق والإنسانية، وهي إنما تستوحيها من نهضة الحسين التي تعتبر بحق المدرسة الأولى للبشرية التي تريد للعقيدة الخالصة نمواً وإزدهاراً. وهذه الدروس التي يعيدها كتابنا (الإمام الحسين في الشعر النجفي) إلى أذهان المؤمنين، ليقتبسوا منه ما يكون فيه لهم هذى ولدينهم ودنياهم منه صلاح، وليعرفوا أن العقيدة لا تموت، وأن الفضيلة عليها، وإن من واجبهم أن يمنعوا عنها كل عدوان مهما كلفهم من نفس ونفيس كما فعل الحسين".
يتالف كتاب (الإمام الحسين في الشعر النجفي) من اربعة أجزاء تجمع قصائد ثلة من الشعراء النجفيين المعاصرين في الحسين(رضي الله عنه) تمتاز بالبلاغة، وجودة الصياغة، وقد رتبت هذه القصائد حسب القوافي، مع الترجمة لشعرائها حسب الترتيب الهجائي.
