مؤلف الكتاب ناشط في العمل القومي منذ نعومة أظفاره، مسكون بهاجس الوحدة، نشأ في بيت سياسي، وشارك فتىً في نضال الشعب السوري ضد المستعمر الأفرنسي، وجاهد شاباً في فلسطين سنة 1948، وشغل مناصب مهمة في سورية، وانتخب في الاتحاد القومي أثناء الوحدة بين القطرين المصري والسوري، عن مدينة دمشق.
وقد سهّل له مركز عائلته، ومناصبه، وأعماله في الحقل القومي، إلى جانب صفاته الشخصية، أن يقيم علاقات واسعة مع مجموعة مرموقة من أصحاب القرار في سورية ولبنان، ومختلف البلاد العربية، فاطلع على كثير من خفايا السياسة العربية، حلوها ومرّها، وعاش انتصاراتها، ونكساتها، فسجل بقلم رشيق ووعي سياسي مشاهداته في هذا الكتاب، ابتداءً من أيام الاستعمار الافرنسي ولغاية بدايات القرن الواحد والعشرين، وأيّد ما كتبه بوثائق وصور مختلفة، فجاء كتابه تاريخاً في مذكرات، ومستودع معلومات لفترة مضطربة في تاريخ العرب، ما يجعله لا غنى عنه لأي مهتم بالشأن القومي أو التاريخي.
