ظل يجرب قراءتها في أوضاع مختلفة؛ فجرب أن يقرأها أثناء المشي في الحديقة, وأثناء الإسترخاء على النجادة في المسبح أو في النهر وقت الظهيرة. حتى ترك قراءة الروايات، ولم يعد يقرأ رواية سواها، ولا يفكر إلًا في أحداثها وفي كافكا. وأصبح يعتقد أن تلك الرواية بالذات، ربما هي الحفرة، التي كان يعتقد أنها حفرة سحرية في طفولته، والتي كان يقفز فيها ـ كلما رافق والده إلى البستان ـ متمنياً العبور إلى عالم آخر كبلاد العجائب، الذي رحلت إليه (أليس) في مغامرتها الشيقة.
أصبح متيقناً أنه ربما وقع في الحفرة السحرية, لكنه ظل عالقاً فيها؛ فلم يذهب في رحلته التي كان يتمنى أن تكون شيقة كرحلة (أليس)، ولا عاد إلى حيث كان يعيش في عالم الروايات. إنما أصبح في صحوة يعيش حالة من الهواجس والمخاوف والتساؤلات، وفي المنام تراوده رؤيا الإوز التي ألحت عليه أكثر من مرة، ولم يحكها حتى لنفسه وتمنى نسيانها، لكنها كانت تلح عليه أكثر.
