في بدايات القرن السابع الميلادي، ظهر الإسلام في شبه الجزيرة العربية، وانتشر بسرعة في قلوب قاطنيها من العرب والأغراب، فتمكن من تغيير طباعهم وتهذيب أخلاقهم وأرسى حجر الأساس واللبنة الأولى في إقامة الحضارة الإسلامية.
وبعد توسع الفاتحون المسلمون خارج حدود شبه الجزيرة، ومع مرور بعض الوقت في سبيل التغلب على الآثار الأولى للصدمة الحضارية / العسكرية التي واجهت كلاً من الغائب والمغلوب.
بدأت مسيرة من التعايش والبناء المشترك ما بين العرب وأهل بلاد الرافدين وفارس والشام ومصر، الذين كانوا - جلهم - من أصحاب الحضارة والثقافة العريقة، وسرعان ما وقع الإندماج ما بين الدين الجديد الذي حمله الغزاة، والثقافة الأصيلة المميزة للبلاد والأقاليم المفتوحة، وكانت نتيجة ذلك الدمج، ظهور ثقافة جديدة ناشئة، حملت في طياتها مبادئ الإسلام وأهدافه العليا وقيمه الأصيلة، وفي الوقت نفسه فقد اصطبغت بصبغة حضارية تماهت فيها سمات ومعالم الحضارات الفارسية والسريانية والقبطية.
في ظل تلك الظروف ظهرت الثقافة الإسلامية، التي امتدت على مدار ما يقرب من أربعة عشر قرناً من الزمان، واشتركت في عملية تكوينها وتأسيسها العديد من العرقيات والإثنيات المنتشرة في منطقة الشرق الأدنى القديم.
وهكذا نمت المخيلة الإبداعية في بلاد الإسلام، وأسفر هذا عن إزدهار الفلسفة والفنون والأداب والقيم الإنسانية المشتركة.
الدين إذن لم يكن في معزل عن عملية التفاعل الثقافي الذي يجري في بلاد الإسلام، بل على العكس من ذلك، فقد كان شريكاً مؤسساً في إنتاج المخيلة الخصبة، والتي تسببت فيما بعد في ظهور التصوف الروحاني، والإهتمام بالشعر والبلاغة، وإنتشار لقيم التسامح والإحترام والتفاهم.
