وتدور ثيمات "ضوء نهار مشرق"، الأساسية حول الطفولة وحياة العائلة واكتشاف الذات وهيمنة الذاكرة وأحداث سنوات الأربعينيات بموسيقاها وثقافتها المختلطة وهيمنة الثقافة الغربية على الهند من جانب والثقافة الإسلامية الأوردية من جانب آخر مع إهمال واضح للثقافة الهندوسية، كما تتقصى الرواية ذلك الشعور بالذنب الذي يميز الأخت الكبرى بيم إزاء عائلتها التي تمثل انهيار الطبقة الوسطى الهندية إثر تقسيم البلاد، مثلما تبحث في علاقة الأخوة بالخوات، والأخوات ببعضهن وتكشف تفاصيل حياة الناس في شرق الهند وهم يواجهون التحديات النفسية والاجتماعية الصعبة، كذلك تقدم الرواية عرضاً ساحراً للتقاليد العائلية والطقوس الدينية وتقاليد الزفاف وولع الأخ راجا (شقيق الفتاتين) بالشعر الأوردي والشعراء الإنكليز... باختصار هي رواية تقدم رؤية ثقافية لهند ما بعد الكولونيالية لحظة امتزاج الثقافات وسعي الجيل الجديد للتنصل من الثقافة الأم...
