الغرض المقصود من هذا الكتاب هو حسب قول مؤلفه أحمد بن محمد بن علي اليمني الإشارة إلى لذة المباشرة بوجوهها، لا الاشتغال بطلب مفقودها. فإن قيل: إن فيه ما هو إلا زيادة منقول من غيرهن فإنما نقلته للاستشهاد به وتصحيح ما أَعه فيه، وسميته: رشد اللبيب إلى معاشرة الحبيب. وقسمته أربعة عشر باباً يحتوي كل منها على فنون ما يشهد الجاهل عليّ بمباشرتها، ويعلم العاقل المصنف أَني لم آتيها.
وجعلته مختصراً قائماً بذاته غير محتاج إلى غيره، ما خلا الأبواب المنقولة من كتب الطب، فإني لم أَتعرض لشيء منها، إذ كان منها ما يصح، ومنها ما لا يصح، وإنما أثبتوها، في كبتهم نقلاً من مواضعها، وتقليداً لواضعها، كذلك أبواب التفرس والقياس في النساء.
