أسهم المعتزلة في صياغة ملامح نظرية نقديّة متكاملة، نجد أثرها وأدواتها في علم الكلام، وعلم أصول الفقه، والنحو العربيّ، وفقه اللغة، وغيرها من المباحث المعرفيّة الخصبة، وتتميّز ملامح هذه النظرية برفض التقليد، لأنه ينفي الحرية الإنسانيّة، ويصادر الوعي الإنساني، ويجرّده من أهمّ أبعاده المتمثّل في التكليف الذي يعني أنّ الإنسان مُكلّف بالخطاب؛ لأنه يملك حرية وعقلاً يمكّنانه من إدراك الأدلة، وتحصيل المعاني.
ولئن دُرِست المذاهب والفرق الإسلامية قديماً وحديثاً على أصعدة متنوعة، فإنّ أحد المباحث، التي لا تزال تنتظر التوسع والتعمق، تلك التي تركّز على مسألة التفاعل بين هذه المذاهب تأثيراً وتأثراً.
ومن المعلوم أنه قد نجم عن التأثير الكبير لأطروحات المعتزلة إنتشار مذهبهم، وإستمراره، وإتساعه في شرق العالم الإسلامي وغربه.
ولم يقتصر تأثير المعتزلة على الفرق الإسلامية، بل تجاوز ذلك ليصل إلى اللاهوت المسيحي، وبينت الدراسات الغربية المعاصرة تجليات التأثير الكلامي الإعتزالي في علم الكلام اليهودي أيضاً.
إن التركيز على المذهب الإعتزالي، اليوم، يأتي في إطار البحث في التراث العربي الإسلامي عن نقاط مضيئة تمكّن العقل والثقافة العربية الإسلامية من الخروج من الدوائر المغلقة التي وصلت إليها، فهذا الإهتمام بالفكر الإعتزالي الإسلامي، في جانب منه، محاولة لإعطاء العقل سلطته المشروعة التاريخية، التي قد تمكّن من الإقناع، بدورها، في تحقيق نهضة الأمة وتقدّمها، والتخلّص من التحجّر والجمود الفكري الذي وصلت إليه.
في هذا الكتاب دراسات توضح بعض وجوه هذا التأثير؛ الذي تجلى من خلال كتابات الشيخ محمد عبده، ومحمد عمارة، ونصر حامد أبو زيد في مصر، مثلما تبين من خلال كتابات هارون ناسوتيون في أندونيسيا، وعبد الكريم سروش في إيران، وغيرهم.
