لم يشهد تاريخ الفكر فلسفة بلغت من السيادة والنفوذ في عصر من العصور ما بلغته فلسفة عمانويل كانط من النفوذ والسيادة على الأفكار في القرن التاسع عشر. فبعد ستين عاماً من التطور الهادئ المنعزل قام "كانط" بهزّ العالم وإيقاظه من نومه العقائدي في عام 1781 بإخراج كتابه المشهور "نقد العقل الخالص". لقد سادت فلسفة شوبنهور فترة قصيرة؛ الموجة الرومانتيكية التي انفجرت في عام 1848، كما اجتاحت نظرية التطور كل شيء أمامها بعد عام 1859، وفازت فلسفة نيتشه بقلب المسرح الفلسفي في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، ولكن هذه الفلسفات لم تكن سوى تطور سطحي يتدفق تحته تيار فلسفة كانط حتى يومنا هذا، قاعدة لكل فلسفة بأخرى. فقد سلم نيتشه بكل ما جاء به كانط واعتبره قضية مسلماً بها، وذكر شوبنهور عن كتاب "العقل الخالص" الذي وصفه كانط بأنه أعظم الكتب في الأدب الألماني وأكثرها أهمية، وعنده أن الإنسان يبقى طفلاً في معرفته إلى أن يفهم كانط. لم يستطع سبنسر فهم كانط، وقد يكون هذا هو السبب في أنه لم يبلغ الذروة في الفلسفة.
وطيّ هذا الكتاب دراسة لهذا الفيلسوف والتي عمد الباحث فيها إلى قراءة لما كتب عن كانط، ليركن فيما بعد إلى ما كتبه كانط نفسه، ويعزو الباحث منهجيته تلك إلى أسلوب كانط في الكتابة، حيث كان يكتب بأسلوب يحيطه التهدف والتعقيد، ولا يحاول سياق الأمثلة لتوضيح أفكاره، زاعماً أنها تطيل كتابه الذي بلغ ثمانمائة صفحة على الرغم من محاولته الاختصار. فهو يقول إنه يكتب للفلاسفة المحترفين وهم ليسوا بحاجة إلى الشرح والتوضيح وسياق الأمثلة، ومع ذلك، فقد عجز هؤلاء عن فهم كتابه. وهذه الدراسة تجعلنا ندنو من هذه الفلسفة في حرص واهتمام وذلك بالاقتراب بدءاً منه عن بعد عنه، من خلال نقاط مختلفة من مدار موضوعه، لنتلمس طريقنا من بعد وعلى ضوء هذه الدراسة إلى تلك الفلسفة المبهمة وإلى ذلك والكنز المغلق.
