يتميز الفكر الفلسفى عبر عصوره الطويلة المتطلعة إلى المستقبل والضاربة بجذورها فى أعماق التاريخ فى ذات الوقت بأنه كالبناء، كل مرحلة من عمره بمثابة لبنة فى بناء كبير، تجمعت فيه لبنات عديدة مكونة له، فهذه يونانية وهذه رومانية وتلك قديمة وأخرى حديثة وبينهما وسيطة، هذه باحثة عن الجمال وتلك مرتبطة بالدين وأخرى محلقة بعيداً عن كل ذلك، ولكن كلها فى بناء واحد يعتمد كل على بعضه ويتأثر الكل بما سبق كما يؤثر فيما لحق. ولهذا تحتل هذه المجموعة التى قدمها لنا الدكتور "محمد على أبو ريان" مكاناً أصيلاً فى المكتبة الفلسفية، حيث أنها وعلى عدد من الكتب أتت كأجزاء تتلو بعضها البعض ناقشت وعرضت ودرست كل فكر وكل مرحلة على حدة وفى ذات الوقت هى قوام واحد. فكان الجزء الأول يتناول الفلسفة القديمة من طاليس إلى أفلاطون، يتبعه الجزء الثانى متناولاً أرسطو والمدارس المتأخرة، والجزء الثالث متناولاً الفلسلفة الإسلامية، أما الجزء الرابع الذى بين يدينا اختص بالفلسفة الإسلامية،أما الجزء الرابع الذى بين يدينا فاختص بالفلسفة الحديثة، وقد أفرد لكل فيلسوف فصلاً يتناول مذهبة وحياته على السواء، ذلك لما تميزت به الفلسفة الحديثة وفلاسفتها من انفراد الفيلسوف فيها كخط متميز وحركة لها ملامحها الخاصة. وفد جاءت الفصول على الترتيب بادئه بالنشاة للفلسفة الحديثة، متناولة بعد ذلك بيكون ثم هوبز ثم ديمارت يليه اسبينوزا وأخيراً ليبنتز، لتصل إلى المرحلة الثانية وهى عصر الإنارة وجون لوك فى نهاية الكتاب.
