تعد البنائية من المذاهب الفكرية التي ظهرت في العصر الحديث وشكلت ثورة في البحث والتطبيق في الدراسات الإنسانية والإجتماعية وطرق التعامل مع المعرفة وإكتسابها وقد نال التربية من تأثيرها القسط الأكبر إذ وصل الأمر إلى أن تصبح منهجاً فكرياً ونشاطاً تربوياً ومدخلاً مهماً للتدريس؛ فقد عدت البنائية من أكثر المداخل التي يشدد عليها التربويون لا سيما في العقدين الأخيرين.
وعلى الرغم من تداخلها مع المدرسة الإدراكية أو المعرفية في الكثير من الأمور فإنها تنفرد عنها بتشديدها على توظيف التعلم من خلال سياقات حقيقية فضلاً عن تشديدها على البعد الإجتماعي في إحداث التعلم.
وقد تأسس على النظرية البنائية الكثير من إستراتيجيات التعليم الحديثة مثل دورة التعلم ونموذج التعلم البنائي وغيرها مما جعل المتعلم يبني معرفته في مناخ إجتماعي ومادي حقيقي يسمح له بإكتساب المفاهيم عن طريق نشاطه وممارساته الذاتية وتمكينه من مراجعة بنيته المعرفية وإعادة تنظيمها لتتواءم مع التعلم الجديد.
وتأسيساً على أهمية النظرية البنائية وتفسيرها لعملية التعلم وتوجه الكثير من الباحثين والمعنيين بشؤون التعليم نحو البحث فيها وما ينبثق عنها من إستراتيجيات تدريس ونماذج تعلم إلى الحد الذي جعل تبني الفكر البنائي في التعليم والتعلم يمثل إتجاهاً تربوياً حديثاً في البحث والتعليم رأى المؤلف أن يتناول في هذا الكتاب النظرية البنائية وما يتصل بها وتطبيقاتها التربوية التي تمثلت بالعديد من إستراتيجيات التدريس الحديثة ونماذج تعلم ما زال الكثير من الباحثين يستخدمونها مشاريع بحوث تجريبية لمعرفة مدى فاعليتها في الكثير من المتغيرات التابعة.
ولكي يتبلور الفرق بين البنائية وما سبقها من نظريات تعلم في المدرسة السلوكية والمدرسة المعرفية وتتجلى رؤية الفكر البنائي في العملية التعليمية وأركانها رأى المؤلف أن يستعرض نماذج من تلك النظريات ورؤيتها وتفسيرها للتعلم ثم يتلو ذلك بعرض البنائية وتطبيقاتها في التعليم فجعل كتابه في أربعة فصول على النحو الآتي: الفصل الأول: نظريات التعلم السلوكية، الفصل الثاني: نظريات التعلم المعرفية، الفصل الثالث: النظرية البنائية ورؤيتها في العملية التعليمية، الفصل الرابع: الإستراتيجيات والنماذج القائمة على النظرية البنائية.
