مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو واحد من أبرز علماء الفيزياء النظرية في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، وهو ستيفن هوكنج أستاذ الرياضيات بجامعة كمبرج في إنجلترا، ويشغل كرسي الأستاذية الذي كان يشغله إسحق نيوتن، وهو كنج مثله مثل نيوتن وآينشتين يعد من الأعمدة الرئيسية للفيزياء. و"الثقوف السوداء" هو أحد مؤلفاته المتعددة وهو يقدم فيه مجموعة من الموضوعات التي كتبها في الفترة من 1976 حتى 1992، والتي يتوجه فيها لغير المتخصصين ليقدم خلاصة نظرياته التي كان لها دويّها في الأساطير العلمية، مثل إثباته لنشأة الكون بالانفجار الكبير، وأعماله عن تقلص النجوم إلى ثقوب سوداء ونظريته عن احتمال وجود أكوان عديدة تبدأ في نشأتها كالبراعم الصغيرة أو الأكوان الطفلة. وإلى جانب هذه المقالات يقدم الخطوط الأولية لسيرته الذاتية.
