يأتي هذا الكتاب كأول إنتاج مجموع لمؤلفه، الأب جورج مسوح، الذي وهو لاهوتي شرقي، أثر على نفسه السعي لمعرفة الإسلام معرفة عميقة تقوم على العلم، وعلى العقل، وعلى احترام الآخر كليا. ولأنه خط لنفسه هذه الطريق، وجد نفسه يشكل شبه تلقائي يهتم بشأن الحوار المسيحي الإسلامي اهتماما أصيلاً يقوم على قناعة راسخة بالحرية المعطاة لكل خلق الله سواسية.
هذا ما يؤكده الكاتب في المقال الذي يتصدر الكتاب، وهذا مدخل أساسي من الناحية العلمية وليس فقط من الناحية الدينية، لأنه بدون الاعتراف بهذه الحرية لا يمكن أن نقارب الحوار بشكل بناء، يلتزم الأب مسوح بهذا الخط التزاماً مطلقاً، فيقبل المقولات التي يناقشها برحابة مطلقة منزهاً نفسه عن أى حكم نوعي من أي نوع كان. وبالوقت وعينه يطلب الكاتب من قرائه أن يعاملوه بالمثل فيقاربوا هم أيضاً بحثه ومطالعاته برحابة ودقة لما في ذلك من دعم للمسيرة الحوارية.
الخيار الذي يرتكز عليه الكتاب خيار وجودي عميق، لا يقبل بالمواقف التلفيقية مطلقا، ولا يأخذ بالمنحى السياسي الذي يقوم على ازدواجية في الخطاب. لذلك مبحث الأب مسوح في القسم الأول من الكتاب مبحث علمي من حيث المنهجية، لكنه من الناحية الإنسانية يتعدى العلم كمنحى لينفذ إلى المصداقية الوجدانية مع من يشاركهم الحياة والشادة لله الأحد.
