يتناول هذا الكتاب أنواع البيانات الاحصائية التي تتوفر عن طريق المسح الجزئي (البيانات المقطعية) أو الشامل (السلاسل الزمنية) وهو كتاب مهم للباحثين الاقتصاديين والاجتماعيين حيث يساعدهم على معرفة الاساليب الاحصائية الواجب اتباعها عند استخدام البيانات العرضية ومشكلة التعدد الخطي، مركزاً على الجوانب التطبيقية في العمل الاحصائي بما يتوافق وآخر التوصيات الدولية ذات الصلة بموضوع الكتاب.
فقد تم التطرق في الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب إلى طبيعة ومصادر البيانات الإحصائية، بهدف التعرف على نوعية البيانات التي تواجه الباحث. وقد قسمت فيه البيانات الإحصائية إلى بيانات اقتصادية وأخرى اجتماعية وسكانية أما بقية فصول الكتاب الثاني، والثالث، والرابع، والخامس والسادس فقد حصصت لمناقشة مشاكل استخدام البيانات الإحصائية. فقد أفرد الفصل الثاني لمناقشة مشكلة عدم تجانس التباين، أما مشكلة الارتباط الذاتي فقد كانت من حصة الفصل الثالث، في حين الفصل الرابع خصص لمناقشة النموذج الخطي العام، حيث تمت مناقشة أكثر من متغير مستقل واحد، وذلك بهدف استيعاب مشكلة التعدد الخطي، من خلال توظيف المعلومات الأولية إلى جانب بيانات العينة في تقدير معالم النموذج الخطي العام. إضافة إلى ما ذكر أعلاه، فقد تضمن الكتاب مجموعة من الأمثلة التطبيقية هذه الأمثلة الواقعية بهدف معالجة المشاكل التي قد تواجه الباحث في دراسته للظاهرة تحت البحث.
ولقد دفعنا إلى إعداد هذا الكتاب شعورنا بالنقص الشديد الذي تعانيه المكتبة العربية في هذه المواضيع إلى جانبتخوف بعض الطلبة والباحثين من استخدام الأساليب الكمية. وقد حاولنا قدر الإمكان التبسيط في العرض وإعطاء أكبر عدد ممكن من الأمثلة التطبيقية ذات الصلة بواقع الحياة العملية، وإننا إذ نضع هذا الكتاب بين أيدي القراء والباحثين أملاً أن يكون مدخلاً فعلياً في الخوض بتفاصيل أساليب القياس الاقتصادي.
