يقدم كتاب (لغز العقل) لسرجيو مورافيا مسحاً نقدياً وتاريخياً عريضاً وواضحاً لأحد السجالات الأساسية في فلسفة العقل: علاقة العقل والجسد، هذه المشكلة التي تستمر في إثارة الأسئلة العميقة المتعلقة بطبيعة الإنسان.
للكتاب هدفان مركزيان: الاول هو تلخيص المساهمات الحديثة الكبرى في هذه المشكلة من جانب فلاسفة العقل، من بين المفكرين والنظريات الذين يشملهم نذكر الوضعية الجديدة المنطقية لهربرت فايغل: أعمال المدرسة الأوسترالية (بليس، سمارت، أرمسترونغ): وظيفانية فودور وبوتنام، الاحدية الشاذة لديفيدسون، ومواقف بعض أتباع فيتغنشتاين (مالكولم، برنشتاين) ومواقف رورتي، غرين، ناغل، دريفوس، ومارغوليس.
إن البروفسور مورافيا وقد رسم هذا الإطار يسعى لتحقيق هدفه الثاني: الإعلان عن قراءة خاصة للعقلي ولمشكلة العقل - الجسد، ينتقد مورافيا بعض المذاهب الأكثر تأثير في هذا الحقل، من الإختزالوية الجسدانية إلى العقلانية: فالعقل لا يمكن إزالته ولا مماهاته بالجسد ولا تفسيره ككيان ميتافيزيقي، بل بالأحرى.
وفقاً للمؤلف، من المجدي أكثر أن ننظر إلى العقل كمركب من التصرفات البراغماتية واللغوية التي تعبِّر الكائنات البشرية عن نفسها من خلالها.
إن معالجة الكتاب المفصلة والمنهجية لهذه القضية الفلسفية الأساسية تجعل منه مثالياً من أجل المناهج الجامعية ومناهج الدراسات العليا في الإبستمولوجيا وفلسفة العقل، ويفترض به أن يبرهن على قراءة محرضة لعلماء النفس وعلماء المعرفة.
