يتضمن هذا الكتاب وهو الأول من "ذخيرة الذات" نصوصاً من السيرة الذاتية في الأدب العربي القديم، وسيليه كتاب ثان في السيرة الذاتية الحديثة، بهدف الوقوف على الحقيقة الأدبية والفلسفية لهذا الجنس الأدبي، في القرون العربية القديمة والحديثة على حد سواء. وتقف وراء هذا الهدف عدة أهداف أخرى متفرعة لا تقل أهمية، في مقدمتها أن قضية تأريخ الفرد لذاته، كانت رغبة، أو "عريزة سردية" متأصلة، رغم أن العديد من الباحثين، في الغرب والشرق، أنكروا وجود هذا الجنس الأدبي في تراثنا.
أما في ثقافتنا العربية الحديثة فقد بدأنا نقرأ دراسات ذات قمية في مجال النظر في هذا الجنس الأدبي، مما جعل مهمة البحث عن وجود نصوص السيرة الذاتية في ثقافتنا القديمة مهمة عرفت تقدماً كبيراً. فلا نكاد نجد إلا إشارات إلى نصوص وأسماء، عند شوقي ضيف، وإحسان عباس، وعبد الله عبد الدايم. لكن لا بد من الإشارة إلى وجود إضطراب مصطلحي ظاهر في أغلب تلك الدراسات.
فمثلاً نجد شوقي ضيف في كتابه "الترجمة الشخصية"، يستعمل مصطلحات "الترجمة" و"المذكرات" و"السيرة" للدلالة على النص الواحد. ربما لأن اللحظة النقدية وقتذاك لم تكن مؤهلة لإنتاج مصطلح له من الذقة ما يكفي للإشارة إلى جنس أدبي قائم الذات ودراسة خصائصه البنيوية والجمالية.
