في كتابها هذا بحثت الدكتورة فاطمة الصايغ في فترة تاريخية مهمة من فترات العلاقات الإماراتية-البريطانية، ولعلها أهمها وهي فترة ما بين الحربين العالميتين الأولى والثانية، إذ فيها ضعفت الإمارات بشكل كبير بسبب الانهيار الاقتصادي الذي تعرضت له نتيجة لانهيار تجارة اللؤلؤ، في الوقت الذي بدت فيه بشائر مصادر اقتصادية أخرى ممثلة بامتيازات المطارات الجوية واحتمال ظهور النفط بكميات تجارية وهما المصدرات اللذان كان الإنجليز يمسكون بزمامهما.
وبناءً عليه فقط ظهرت مماحكات سياسية واقتصادية واجتماعية بين الإنجليز الذين كانوا يطمعون في الحصول على احتكارات شاملة للامتيازين المذكورين سواء بالقوة أو بالإقناع، وبين الحكام الذين يقفون حائرين أمام تقاليدهم الاجتماعية ومواجهة المشاكل المالية والتساؤلان الشعبية التي أنهكها الانهيار المالي ومحاولتها المشاركة في البناء الاقتصادي الجديد.
وقد نجحت المؤلفة في تفسير الخلفية السياسية لتلك الأحداث ونقد التبريرات الإيديولوجية التي ادعتها بريطانيا في سياستها مع الإمارات، فكانت المواضيع التي طرقتها لازال صداها مسموعاً في آذان الجيل السابق من أهل الإمارات الذين عاشوها، كما نجحت المؤلفة ومن خلال استعراضها لأدبيات السياسة البريطانية لثلاثة عقود تقريباً، أن تثبت أن شعب الإمارات يكمن الاستعداد الكامل للمواجهة وأنهم حكاماً وشعوباً لم يكونوا خاملين سلبيين مطيعين ومستسلمين للغطرسة السلطوية الإنجليزية، إذ أن معظم طلبات الإنجليز كانت تقابل بالرفض أولاً إلى أن يتم تدارسها وفهمها قبل الإقرار عليها، ولا يهمهم إذا ما لوحت بريطانيا أولاً إلى أن يتم تدارسها وفهمها قبل الإقرار عليها، ولا يهمهم إذا ما لوحت بريطانيا باستعمال القوة أو فرضت الحصار الاقتصادي أو وجهت مدافع سفنها تجاه قصر الحاكم، فجاءت صور الأحداث وتسلسلها رائقة مستساغة. لذلك فقد نالت المؤلفة على كتابها هذا درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة (ايسيكس) في المملكة المتحدة.
