في هذا الكتاب يضيء "هلال ناجي" رئيس إتحاد المؤلفين والكتّاب العراقيين (سابقاً) على واحد من أهم خطاطين بغداد في القرن الثالث الهجري وهو (إبن البواب) علي بن هلال بن عبد العزيز، كنيته أبو الحسن، ولقبه إبن البواب لأن أباه كان بواباً، ولا يعرف على اليقين تاريخ مولده، نشأ في بغداد، وتلقى علوم العربية عن أبي الفتح عثمان بن جنى اللغوي المتوفي سنة 392 هـ، وتعلم فنون الكتابة الخطية على يد إبن أسد الخطاط المشهور.
وفي هذا السياق يدرس الكاتب خصائص خط إبن البواب من خلال مخطوطاته في محاولة لاستنباط خصائص الكتابة عند إبن البواب الذي لقب بـ"قلم الله في أرضه". لذلك كله يجمع هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه أهم الآثار النفيسة التي كتبها إبن البواب وانحدرت إلينا عبر قرون، وقد اعتمد الكاتب في تحقيقها وتصنيفها على عدد من المخطوطات القديمة الموجودة في دور كتب عربية وأجنبية، مما فيها من شروحات وأشعار وفنون لم يبق أحد من المؤرخين القدامى إلا وانبهر بجمالها، حتى لقبوه بأنه كان إماماً في الخط، فيقول عنه الذهبي: "إنه ملك الكتابة"، وقال إبن كثير عنه: "لم يكن بعد إبن مقلة أكتب منه".
هذا، وقد تضمن الكتاب (صوراً من النماذج القلمية الباقية من خط إبن البواب) وضعها الكاتب بين دفتي الكتاب عن مصادرها الأصلية منها على سبيل المثال: "صفحة من المصحف الكريم المحفوظ في مكتبة جستر بيتي بدبلن برقم 1431 بخط إبن البواب"، و "نص رسالة محمد بن يزيد (المبرد النحوي) إلى أحمد بن الواثق في البلاغة المحفوظة في دار صدام للمخطوطات برقم 13238" وصور أخرى.
