يُعُّد كتاب "حوار في الإمامة" من أهم الكتب في الجدل الشيعي - الوهابي في العصر الحديث، فهو الكتاب الأول الذي يقوم على مبدأ الحوار للوصول إلى جذور الإختلاف الطائفي في الإسلام منذ نشأته الأولى.
وقد دار الحوار بين شخصيتين لهما أهميتُهما العلمية والإجتماعية معاً، فالأول عالم شيعي كان قد تخّرج في جامعة النجف العلمية، ودرس دراسةً منهجية منتظمة على يد كبار المجتهدين أمثال الإمام السيد محمد باقر الصدر، وقد نشأ مولعاً بالعلوم العقلية، والفلسفية إلى جانب إختصاصه في علوم التشريع كالفقه، والأصول، ومناهج التفسير، والحديث وعلم الرجال.
أمَّا الثاني فهو مُفكّر إسلامي ينتمي إلى المدرسة الوهابية، جمعَ بين الثقافتين الدينية القديمة إلى جانب تخصصه العالي في الفيزياء النظرية والرياضية.
وقد بدأت هذه المطارحات المتبادلة بين آية الله الشيخ محسن الأراكي، والدكتور محمد المسعري، حول موضوع الإمامة القضيّة المركزية المُتَنازع عليها بين الطوائف الإسلامية لإرتباطها بشكل السلطة، وطبيعة نظام الحكم في الإسلام.
فاتسم حوار (الأراكي - المسعري) بالرغم من جدَّته، وريادته في فتح باب الحوار الحضاري لتكرار مثل هذه التجارب المخلصة، حيث يعد كخطوة أولى لصياغة نظرية جديدة للعالم الإسلامي تقوم على التوّحد المتكامل بدلاً من الفُرقة الناتجة عن التمسك بمفاهيم العداوة والبغضاء، وما يُشتقُّ منهما من مُسَمَّيات.
