في هذا الكتاب رواية زمانها القرن الحادي والعشرون... لقد أقفر الريف تقريباً .. واكتظت المدن بالسكان .. منهم من يعمل على الحواسب ويعيش في ما يسمى بوحدات العمل السكنية.. ومنهم من لا يعمل ويقضي وقته متسكعاً في الشوارع.. لقد صممت وحدات العمل هذه بما يناسب عدد قاطنيها وبحيث يتوجب دفع ضريبة على كل طفل جديد زائد فيها.. وأصبحت الشوارع مسرحاً للمطاردات الدائمة بين دوريات الأمن والمشردين. في هذه الظروف يجد البعض أنه من الأفضل البحث عن موطن جديد.. ويندفع عبر البراري مجتازاً الجبال والوديان بحثاً عن حياة أفضل.. في آخر فصول الخريف يفر اثنان من المدينة الى الريف ويحققان هناك تحت خوف المطاردة اكتشافاً غير متوقع... ثم ينضم إليهما مسافران آخران ويواجه الأربعة مخاطر وأهوال جديدة. وهذه الرواية تتحدث عن قصة هؤلاء الثلاثة وتبدأ بأصغرهم وتدعى رين.
