الكتاب اختصره المصنف في كتاب الملك المؤيد "أبو الفداء" المختصر في أخبار البشر حيث قدمه مختصراً في نحو ثلثيه اختصاراً زاده حسناً، وكفل بوجازة اللفظ وكمال المعنى أقام به أغربه وزللاً صعابه، لينمقه بياناً، ملحقاً به بعض ما فات المؤيد من حوادث، وذيله من سنة تسع وسبعمائة التي وقف المؤيد عليها إلى السنة الذي صار الوردي إليها. مرتباً التواريخ القديمة ضمن مقدمة وخمسة فصول، والتواريخ الإسلامية على السنين.
تضمنت المقدمة ثلاثة أمور الأمر الأول في اختلاف المؤرخين والأمر الثاني في أن نسخ التوراة ثلاث والأمر الثالث في جدول يتضمن ما بين التواريخ المشهورة من المدد. وأما الفصول: الأول منها في عمود التواريخ القديمة وذكر الأنبياء عليهم السلام على الترتيب، الثاني في ذكر ملوك الفرس وملوك الطوائف وفي ذكر الطبقة الثالثة من الفرس ومن ذكر الطبقة الرابعة وهم الأكاسرة الساسانية. الفصل الثالث في ذكر فراعنة مصر ثم ملوك اليونان، ثم الروم. الفصل الرابع في ملوك العرب قبل الإسلام. وأما الخامس فكان في ذكر الأمم: السريان والصابئين والقبط والفرس واليوم، وفي أمم العرب وأحوالهم قبل الإسلام وفي ذكر المستعربة وفي قصة النيل ليأخذ الكتاب بعد ذلك منهجاً آخر بعد ولادة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حيث جاءت الأحداث التاريخية مرتبة على السنين.
