كتاب الشرق الإسلامي والغرب المسيحي "هو بالأساس أطروحة لنيل شهادة دكتوراه دولة في مادة التاريخ بعنوان "العلاقات ما بين المدن الإيطالية وشرقي المتوسط" (1450-1517). والكتاب هو عبارة عن دراسة رصينة متجددة هدفت إلى إبراز طبيعة العلاقات ما بين المدن والجمهوريات الإيطالية، أي البندقية وجنوى وفلورنسا وبيزا وغيرها ومصر وسوريا في سلطنة المماليك في القرن السادس عشر. وطبيعة العلاقات هذه قديمة ومتشعبة قدم الحملات الصليبية وتشعباتها وهي عميقة الجذور وشملت عدة نقاط منها الطرقات التجارية المطروقة وأنواع السفن المستعملة والنقود المتداولة والسفارات والمعاهدات المعقودة والبضائع المتبادلة والانعكاسات والنتائج الحاصلة على كل من مصر وسوريا والمدن الإيطالية خاصة البندقية.
يتميز هذا الكتاب عن غيره من الكتب بعدة أمور لعل أهمها الصور واللوحات الفريدة التي زيّن بها الكتاب والتي أضفت عليه طابعاً مميزاً، اتسمت هذه الرسالة بطابع البحث العلمي الرصين فعالجت المواضيع بدقة وعمق وهي تستند إلى الحقائق المستمدة من الأصول والمراجع المتعددة عربية وأجنبية (فرنسية، إنكليزية، إيطالية) وهذا ما ساعد الباحث على الوصول إلى نتائج واستنتاجات جديدة وطريفة.
