يبرز هذا الكتاب فضل ومكانة ومنزلة أهل البيت عليهم السلام في الأحاديث الواردة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فهو بمجمله حديث عن أهل البيت وإخبار بفضلهم ودفاعهم عن دين الله، ولكن الجزء الأكبر منه يتناول بالتفصيل واقعة (كربلاء) التاريخية، منذ انطلاقة الحسين عليه السلام من المدينة، ثم إلى مكة، ثم إلى الكوفة، ثم إلى كربلاء. ويسرد المؤلف بالتفصيل الأحداث والوقائع التي مرت بها هذه القافلة والمواقف التي اتخذها رجالها ونساؤها، ثم يتناول مصرع الحسين عليه السلام وأهل بيته ومصارع أصحابه رضوان الله عليهم أجمعين، وما جرى عليهم من جنود عبيد الله بن زياد ومناصريه. ثم يتناول بالحديث وقائع سبي نساء الحسين وأهل بيته وأطفالهم ومسيرهم من الكوفة إلى الشام، ثم عودتهم إلى كربلاء ثم المدينة. ويذكر الكتاب أيضاً مشاهد ومواقف وخطب ألقيت على مسامع الناس من قبل الإمام زين الدين العابدين وزينب وأم كلثوم في الكوفة والشام. وألحق بالكتاب جزءاً لا بأس به من الشعر المنتقى من كتب عدة ولشعراء عدة في رثاء أهل البيت عليهم السلام، نذكر منهم: علي جليل الوردي، السيد رضا الهندي، السيد حيدر الحلي وآخرون.
