يعتبر المنهج المدرسي الدستور الذي تسير عليه العملية التعليمية التعلمية، أو الخطة التي تهتدي بهديها هذه العملية؛ وذلك لأنه يرسم القواعد الأساسية لها، والمنطلقات التي تنطلق منها، والكيفية التي يجب التعامل فيها مع التلاميذ، وماذا يتعلمون، وكيف يتعلمون، ولماذا يتعلمون. وما صلة تعلمهم بالواقع الذي يعيشونه والمجتمع الذي ينتمون إليه، والثقافة التي يتقاسمون مفرداتها.
لذا وجب على كل معلم – أياً كان تخصصه – أن يفهم المنهج المدرسي وكيفية تطوره عبر السنوات، وأسس بناته وتنظيماته المختلفة، كي ينطلق إلى تطويره بما يتواكب مع روح العصر الذي يعيش فيه التلاميذ، وهم صناع المستقبل.
