إن البحث عن المثقف العربي في الحضارة الإسلامية هو بمثابة دعوة مضمرة إلى تجاوز الضجر واكتشاف عظيم الأهمية لمرجعية تاريخية أصيلة، يستقي منها المثقف العربي المعاصر فاعليته ويبرز دوره التاريخي، ويتجاوز بآن غربته الايديولوجية والفكرية التي يستقيها من كتاب القرن الثامن عشر وفلسفة عصر الأنوار. وهذا الكتاب يذهب إلى أبعد من البحث عن المثقف وعن التساؤل عن جدواه، إنه يبحث في الإشكاليات التي يثيرها المثقف في سعيه إلى خطب ودّ الأمير؟ وفي بياناته ذات الطابع السحري عن الديمقراطية، في نقده المؤدلج للنص في الوقت الذي يزعم فيه أنه يقوم بقراءة معاصرة، في تصوره النمطي عن الآخر والذي يقودنا باستمرار إلى معادلات مستحيلة الحلّ. وأخيراً في إرادة عدم معرفة لما تزل تتحكم في الخطاب العربي المعاصر وتدفعه إلى أحضان التوفيقية والانتقائية والايديولوجيا المتخشبة.
