خضع التراث البلاغي العربي لقراءات ومراجعات وتأويلات عدة، على مدار ما يزيد على قرن ونصف من الزمان. وخلّفت هذه المجهودات العلمية ذخيرة كبيرة من الكتابات الشارحة هذا التراث الغني في ذاته. غير أن التحديات المعرفية التي يثيرها هذا التراث لا تتوقف عن البزوغ، والأسئلة البحثية التي يولّدها التفاعل المتواصل معه لاتكاد تنقضي.
ينتمي هذا الكتاب إلى حقل الخطابات الشارحة؛ إذ يأخذ على عاتقه تحليل خطاب البلاغيين العرب القدامى؛ بهدف الكشف عن مكوّناته، وآليات بنائه وتطوره، والعوامل المؤثرة فيه، وطرق التأليف البلاغي المهيمنة عليه.
يحلل الكتاب عملية تشكل المفاهيم البلاغية، وتطور اصطلاحاتها في ضوء نظريات علم المصطلح؛ بهدف بلورة إجراءات حقيقة لضبط البُنى الإصطلاحية في البلاغة القديمة.
يدرّس الكتاب بشكل مفصّل العلاقة بين الظواهر البلاغية والوظائف التي ترتبط به؛ متخذاً من الكتابات العربية حول أسلوب الإلتفات مدونة له. وخلال ذلك يطوّف بين معارف متنوعة ومتداخلة؛ من أبرزها تفسير القرآن ومعانيه؛ وشروح الشعر، والنقد الأدبي، وعلوم اللغة، والبلاغة العامة.
