يتضمن هذا الكتاب شرح خمسين حديثاً منتقاةٍ من جوامع كلمه صلى الله عليه وسلم، يندرج منها معانٍ كثيرة في ألفاظ قليلة، وهي مما خصَّ الله به رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهذه الأحاديث الخمسون تم جمعها من مصادر ثلاث: 1- 26 حديثاً أملاها ألإمام الحافظ المفتي إبن الصلاح في مجلس سماه: الأحاديث الكلية جمع فيه الأحاديث الجوامع التي يقال: أن مدار الدين عليها، وما كان في معناها من الكلمات الجامعة الوجيزة.2- ثم إن الإمام النووي أخذ هذه الأحاديث التي أملاها ابن صلاح، وزاد عليها تمام إثنين وأربعين حديثاً، سمّى كتابه بالأربعين، واشتهرت هذه الأربعون التي جمعها، وكثر حفظها. 3- ثم إن الحافظ إبن رجب ضم إلى ذلك كلّه ثمانية أحاديث أخرمن جوامع الكلمالجامعة لأنواع العلوم والحكم، فبلغت خمسين حديثاً، ولأهمية هذه الأحاديث ثم شرحما يسّر الله للشارح من معانيها، وتقييد مافتح الله به عليه من تبيان قواعدها ومعانيها.
وقد إعتنى في شرحه هذا بالتفقه بالأحاديث النبوية وتفسير غريبها. وشرح معانيها، وتأويل مختلفها، وبيان أحكامها، وما يترتب عليها من الفقه وإختلاف العلماء، فكان هذا الشرح من أجل الشروح، وأكثرها أهمية، وأفضلها بالفوائد وقد بدأ الشارح كتابه بمقدمة موجزة أبان فيها من الطريقة التي أتبعها في الشرح، فقال:" أعلم أنه ليس من غرضي إلا شرح الألفاظ النبوية التي تضمنتها هذه الأحاديث من الصحابة رضي الله عنهم، ولا بألفاظه في العزو إلى الكتب التي يعزو إليها، وإنما آتي بالمعنى الذي يدل على ذلك، لأني قد أعلمتك أنه ليس لي غرض إلا شرح معاني كلمات النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم الجوامع، وما تضمنته من الآداب والحكم والمعارف، والأحكام والشرائع، وأشير إشارة لطيفة قبل الكلام في شرح الحديث إلى إسناده، لِيُعْلَم بذلك صحته وقوته وضعفه، وأذكر بعض ما روي في معناه من الأحاديث إن كان في ذلك الباب شيء غير الحديث الذي ذكره الشيخ وإن لم يكن في الباب غيره أو لم يكن يصح فيه غيره، نبهت على ذلك كله.
