حظي التأويل بمجال تداولي واسع قبل أن يقعَد له ويتحول إلى نظرية ولا سيما عند الفقهاء والمتكلمين، وذلك لإرتباطه بالخطاب القرآني المعجز الذي يشتمل على آيات تتفاوت في وضوحها وغموضها وفهم المراد منها على وجه التحقيق فهناك آيات يدرك معناها من ظاهر لفظها وتركيبها دون حاجة إلى تأويل في مقابل آيات أخرى تحتاج إلى أعمال الفكر والنظر فيها وذلك بصرف معنى الآية عن ظاهر لفظها إلى معنى آخر يحتمله السياق بالدليل أو القرينة ولعل قضية توجيه النص وصرفه من مدلول ظاهري إلى آخر تحتمل دواعي موضوعية قد تكون مجازفة لا تخلو من محاذير قد تنتهي إلى إخراج الخطاب من مدلوله وربطه بمدلولات قد تكون صواباً فعملية التأويل التي هي توجيه للنص قد تكون ضرورة ومحاولة جادة لفهم النص، كما يمكن أن تتخذ مطية لتحريف النص وشحنه بما لا يحتمله من المفاهيم المسبقة التي لا تخدم في شيء قضية الفحص الأمين للنص.
