كيف تتشكل الهويات الجماعية وما الذي يجعلها قادرة على التعبئة بهذه الكثافة؟ هل أن الديمقراطية لا تتلاءم مع التعددية الاجتماعية-الثقافية؟ هل أن المجتمعات الإفريقية أو العربية مقدر لها أن تخضع للتسلط السياسي بحكم ثقافتها؟ هل أن الإسلام عصي على الحداثة؟ تلك هي بعض الأسئلة التي يدور حولها هذا الكتاب. في مواجهة الأحكام المسبقة الثقافوية التي يتقاطع عندها أحياناً الحس العام والحس العلمي، يقترح الكتاب إعادة نظر نقدية للنقاش حول الهويات في السياسة في ضوء نظرة فرنسية معينة لتنامي الشعور الاتني.
وهو إذا يؤيد اعتبار المطالبة الهوية كظاهرة متجدرة في الحداثة، فإنه يعالج الموضوع بدون أية فكرة مسبقة، إيجابية كانت أم سلبية، وفقاً للقواعد الأولية لتحليل علم الاجتماع، وهو إذ يرفض فكرة أن الوعي الهوي هو تعبير عن عودة إلى البدائية الطبيعية، فإنه يفترض على العكس من ذلك أنها يمكن أن تكون عامل دخول إلى المواطنة وإلى الفضاء العام، أي نمطاً مشروعاً للمشاركة السياسية، بالإضافة إلى ذلك، كيف يمكن الإصرار على النظر إلى العامل الهوي وكأنه مظهر ماضوي وبال، فيما هو يندرج بقوة في العولمة؟ أهي مفارقة؟ بالطبع، إنما في الظاهر فقط. لأن التوجه الشمولي، بدل أن يذوب التعدد الثقافي في "ثقافة متفوقة"، فإنه يزيد من حدته ويشجع بذلك على تواتر النزاعات الهوية. ولكن إذا ما كان هناك طوائفية في السياسة وانكفاء مصحوب بالخوف باتجاه المحلي، أليس ذلك في نهاية المطاف لأن العولمة تنحو كذلك باتجاه إنتاج العزل؟ هذا الكتاب مدين كثيراً إلى عمل ميداني امتد في إفريقيا لأكثر من عشرين سنة. ولكنه إذا كان يبرز الواقع الإفريقي، فإن طموحه في المقارنة يبقى أشمل: من هذه الناحية لا تكون إفريقيا سوى الكاشفة والمضخمة للديناميات الشمولية التي لا تفلت منها حتى بلدان الشمال، بهذا المعنى إن إفريقيا تحدثنا كذلك عن أنفسنا.
