هذا الكتاب من أعمدة كتب السلوك والرقائق، وضعها مؤلفها لأهل الارتقاء في مقامات الإحسان، المشتغلين بتحقيق معاني التقوى في أقوى مبانيها وأسع معانيها.
وقد بنى الإمام القشيري كتابه على توضيح جانبين:
- الجانب الأول: سيرة رجال السلوك وبعض أقوالهم، وذكر كثيراً من أعلامهم كنماذج يسير المريد على هديهم.
- والجانب الثاني: ذكر مبادئ السلوك ومناهجه، حيث قال رحمه الله تعالى: (ذكرت فيها بعض سير شيوخ الطريقة، في آدابهم، وأخلاقهم، ومعاملاتهم، وعقائدهم بقلوبهم، وما أشاروا إليه من مواجيدهم، وكيفية ترقيهم من بدايتهم إلى نهايتهم، لتكون لمريدي هذه الطريقة قوة، ومنكم لي بتصحيحها شهادة، ولي في نشر هذه الشكوة سلوة، ومن الله فضلاً ومثوبة).
لقد كانت هذه الرسالة وما تزال النبع الصافي الذي يستقي منه كل دارس لعلم السلوك، وكل مستشرف ومتشوف لحياة النور؛ خصوصاً في هذه الأيام الحالكة بالأمور الدنيا حتى (إذا أخرج يده لم يكد يراها ومن لم يجعل الله له نوراً فما له من نور).
إن إظهار مثلهذا الكتاب المبارك رسم لفكرة العبودية الصحيحة، وتوضيح لما ينبغي أن تكون عليه الصلة بين الإنسان وربه، وبين الإنسان ومجتمعه.
وقد امتازت هذه الطبعة باعتمادها على نسخ خطية أصيلة مسندة قريبة العهد بالمؤلف، وعليها سماعات الإمام القشيري بواسطتين.
