في أوائل ذلك القرن رأى الإمام القشيري مناحي تنبعث منها روائح الانحراف الديني ونواحي تخالف التعاليم الأصيلة وتجافي السلوك الإسلامي وتتنافى مع روح الدين وسماحته.
رأى تعاليم الدين تنتهك باسم التصوف.. ورأى سفارات تزيف وقيماً تغير ومعايير يتجه بها في غير اتجاهها.. رأى كل ذلك يرتكب باسم التصوف.. رأى أهل القشور المظهرية, ورأى أهل المغالاة والشطط, ورأى أهل الزيف والجنوح. رآهم وجلهم يدعون أنهم متصوفة ويسيرون تحت لواء التصوف يتشدقون بالحفاظ عليه ويزعمون أنهم وحدهم هم حفظته وسدنته ودعاته ورعاته.
وخشى القشيري أن تمتد أثواب الباطل فتغطي وجه الحق أو تتبلد سماء الحقيقة بغيوم الأكاذيب وبسحب الترهات فتحول بين أشراق الحق أو تحجب نوره ولو إلى حين.
وحتى لا تضيع معالم الحق بين متاهات الباطل ولأجل أن يضع حداً فاصلاً بين التصوف الصرف والتصوف الزائد, أخرج هذه الرسالة القشيرية لتكون النبع الصافي الذي يستقى منه كل دارس للتصوف وكل مستشرق للنور.
