في العودة إلى زمن الكتاب نجد أن الدول المسيطرة على هذه المنطقة غير الدول التي تحكمها اليوم. لقد دالت الدولة العثمانية بسلاطينها ودالت الدولة الإيرانية، وكذلك امبراطورية روسيا بقياصرتها وتخلص العراق من النفوذ الانكليزي واحتلاله. وهذا الكتاب يروي قصة مآسي الشعوب والطوائف التي كانت تعاني من نفوذ هذه الدول في الشرق الأوسط وفي مقدمتها الكرد والعرب والأرمن والأثوريون. سنرى كيف كانت اطماع تلك الدول تعبث بمقدرات هذه الشعوب، لقد كتب هذان المبعوثان بكثير من العطف على شعوب منطقة شرق كردستان والبلاد العربية وتخوفاً كثيراً من المصير الأليم الذي ينتظرها بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى، سوف نتلمس تحمساً للأكراد مع شجب قاس أحياناُ لعادات المجتمع القبلي وما يشوبه من نقائض ونقائص وعيوب. سوف نتتبع هذان الباحثان وانطباعاتهما وقراءتهما للأحداث السياسية- الإجتماعية –لتلك الفترة، سوف نتعرف على حلب القديمة، وغزوات تيمورلنك للشرق العربي، ووصف للمدن والسواحل وعادات الشعوب وتقاليدها وأديانها ومعتقداتها. وكذلك الثورات والمواجهات وطرق الحكم، فضلاً عن مقاسات ظريفة واقاصيص وحكايات ونوادر سنستمتع بقراءتها.
