"على الجانب الأيمن ميناء سانتا ماريا في مدينة قادش كان هناك ممر تحيط به أوراق التين يؤدي إلى البحر، خلفه منطقة تبعث على الحزن تحمل اسم مصارع ثيران قديم "مازنتيني" تملؤها أشجار الرتيجة البيضاء والصفراء تدعى "المرج الضائع" هناك كل شيء كالذكرى، الطيور التي تحلق حول الأشجار المتوارية، غنت على أغصان ماضية. الرياح الهائمة بين شجيرات الحديقة تهتف عالياً فوق قممها الخضراء السامقة، التي كان بإمكانها هزهزة تلك القمم كي تشعرها بنفحاتها الشاملة، الأفواه، الأيدي، الجباه التي تبحث عن برودة ظليلة واستراحة مطمئنة، نحو الماضي كان إيقاع كل شيء هناك، نحو تلك الغابة القديمة المنسية حتى الضوء كان يتساقط كذكرى على الضوء، ألعاب الطفولة حينما كنا نتغيب عن المدرسة لنضيع في همسات ذلك المرج، الآن كلما أتوغل أكثر وأجعل من نفسي نقطة بعيدة، أتلاشى في هذا الشارع المؤدي إلى النهاية، إلى خليج الظل الذي ينتظرني فقط كي ينقلب على نفسه. أسمع ورائي خطوات الزحف الأصم، الغزو العنيد لهذا المرح المستذكر الضائع من سني عمري"...
ذكريات طويلة، من غير الممكن لملمتها، غير أن "رفائيل البرتي" المسكون بالرومانسية الشعبية التي تمثلها أشكال شعرية غنائية كالبلاد وأغاني الرعاة استطاع بتدوين مذكراته كي لا تضيع، مكرساً بذلك أدباً واقعياً يستظل بسمات الأدب الرومانسي الشعبي، أبدع من خلاله سيرة ذاتية صورت المراحل التي مر بها إبداعه الأدبي المنطلق من مناخات اجتماعية وثقافية وسياسية واكبت حياة الروائي.
