يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه: إن تناول أعمال تشارلز داروين لا يقدم سوى المزيد من الفوائد. وحتى عهدٍ قريب، كثيراً ما تخفت دروينية داروين في الأدبيات الأكثر تناولاً من قبل الجمهور على الأقل، خلف داروينية المنظرين المعاصرين، واليوم، وبسبب الشكوك التي ألمحت إليها، فإن قراءة جديدة "لأصل الأنواع" ممكنة، بل وضرورية، ليس فقط قراءة "علمية" تستهدف كشف الأفكار التي ما تزال مجهولة، إنما قراءة توجهها فضولية أبستمولوجية وتاريخية أكثر شمولاً، تسمح بتقدير أفضل لكيان علم التطور ولمختلف مشكلاته.
وفي هذه المنطقة التي تختلط فيها الأسئلة الابستمولوجية والأسئلة الاجتماعية يبدأ المؤلف دراسته، التي يحاول من خلالها وضع قراءة جديدة للنظرية الدارونية من خلال تحديد قيمة الأطروحات الداروينية، والدلالة الاجتماعية لهذه الأطروحات.
