عالج "فان فولتن" في كتابه هذا ناحية من نواحي التاريخ الإسلامي قلما سبقه إليها أحد من المستشرقين. ولا حيث أمدنا بطائفة قيّمة من المواضيع الجديرة بالبحث في تاريخ الدولة الأموية: من ذلك ما كتبه عن الخراج، وحالة الموالي السياسية والإجتماعية، وسياسة عمر بن عبد العزيز نحوهم وأثرها، ثم عن الثورات التي أذكى نارها الخوارج. كما افرد باباً مطولاً عن الشيعة، وعقائدها، وطوائفها المختلفة، وعن غيرها من الفرق الدينية كالخرمية والراوندية، وبيّن إلى اي حد استفاد العباسيون من قيام هذه الطوائف المختلفة في نشر دعوتهم في العراق ثم في خراسان. وقد أفرد المؤلف باباً طويلاً تكلم فيه عن العقائد غير الإسلامية التي أخذها المسلمون عن المسيحية واليهودية وغيرهما من العقائد الفارسية القديمة – وهو ما يسميه علماء المسلمين "الإسرائيليات" ولا سيما ما يتعلق منها بالتنبؤ بمصير العالم، ورجعة عيسى بن مريم وظهور الدجال. كذلك أفاض المؤلف الكلام عن عقيدة المهدي وأثرها في سقوط الدولة الأموية.
وقد سلك المؤلف في بحث هذه الموضوعات طريقة تحليلية دقيقة، كما ناقش المصادر العربية ومحّص ما ورد فيها من الحقائق التاريخية تمحيصاً يدل على دقة البحث وسعة الإطلاع، كما يتبين ذلك من المصادر العربية والإفرنجية الكثيرة التي اعتمد عليها. ومما يمتاز به هذا الكتاب أن مؤلفه لم يقتصر في بحثه على الكتب التاريخية فحسب، بل استعان على كشف بعض المسائل بالقرآن الكريم وكتب السنة والأدب والمذاهب.
