عالج المؤلف في كتابه ناحية من نواحي التاريخ الإسلامي قلما سبقه اليها احد من المستشرقين. ولا غرو فقد امدنا بطائفة قيمة من المواضيع الجديرة بالبحث في تاريخ الدولة الأموية، من ذلك ما كتبه عن الخراج، وحالة الموالى السياسية والاجتماعية وسياسية عمر بن عبد العزيز نحوهم وأثرها، ثم عن الثورات التى اذكى نارها الخوارج كما أفرد بابا مطولا عن الشيعة وعقائدها وطوائفها المختلفة وعن غيرها من الفرق الدينية كالخرمية والرواندية وبين إلى اى حد استفاد العباسيون من قيام هذه الطوائف المخلتفة في نشر دعوتهم في العراق ثم في خراسان. وقد فطن المؤلف إلى ما لم يفطن اليه غيره من المؤرخين من أسباب سقوط الامويين فأفرد بابا طويلا تكلم فيه عن العقائد غير الاسلامية التى اخذها المسلمون عن المسميحية واليهودية وغيرهما من العقائد الفارسية القديمة- وهو ما يسميه علماء المسلمين "الاسرائيليات".
ولم يقتصر عملنا على مجرد نقل الكتاب إلى اللغة العربية، بل عنينا في الوقت نفسه بنقد بعض ما ذهب اليه المؤلف من الآراء التى لا تتفق البحث التاريخي النزية. من ذلك ما ذهب إليه من القولبأن الاسلام قد انتشر عن طريق الارهاب لا عن طريق الاقناع بالحجة والدليل. كذلك ما ذكره من بغض أهالي البلاد التى فتحها العرب للإسلام ومحاولتهم الارتداد عنه،وأن المسلمين كانوا يضطهدون اهالي البلاد التى فتحوها، وهو ما لا يتفق مع روح الاسلام وخلق الرسول ثم خلفائه من بعده.
