يحتوي هذا الكتاب على دراسة وتحقيق لنصِّ رسالة "المقدمة في التصوف" التي تعد واحدة من بواكير النصوص الصوفية التي صاغت السلوك الصوفي، وحدّدت مجموعة المبادئ الخلقية عند الصوفية المسلمين.
مؤلف المخطوطة هو أبو عبد الرحمن السلمي (مؤرخ الصوفية المعروفة، المتوفي 412 هجرية) ومجموعة المبادئ والقيم الخلقية التي تقدمها الرسالة ليست مشروعاً لإقامة منهج خلقي، بقدر ما هي وقفات قصار أمام بعض القيم الإسلامية والمعاني الصوفية مثل المحبة، والشفقة، والسخاء... إلخ.
ويبدأ الكتاب الذي أنجزه د. يوسف زيدان أيام كان في السنة الاخيرة من مرحلة الليسانس، بمقدمة تتناول السُّلَمي ومؤلفاته، يتلوها النص المحقق المنشور إعتماداً على مخطوطة بلدية الإسكندرية، وهي المخطوطة الوحيدة في العالم من المقدمة في التصوف.
