يجد القارئ المتمعن للنصوص المصرية القديمة أن الأفكار الدينية لدى المصريين القدماء تتمحور حول فكرة مركزية عظمى وهي فكرة الخلود التي ظلت تتمتع بالثبات على مر العصور وتدل هذه الدراسات أيضاً على أن المصريين كانوا يؤمنون بإمكانية قيام الإنسان الفاني من بين الموات ويبلغ الحياة الأبدية وهذا ما تؤيده النصوص الدينية التي يتضمنها "كتاب الموتى". الذي يعكس ما يؤمن به المصريون من معتقدات تتعلق بالموت والحياة والأخرى.
والمؤلف واليس بدج أراد من هذا الكتاب أن يقدم عرضاً وافياً للأفكار والعقائد التي تتعلق بالموت والبعث عن المصريين. وقد استسقى معلوماته من الأعمال المأتمية والدينية التي تركها المصريون القدماء. يقع الكتاب في خمسة فصول يبين المؤلف في الفصل الأول أن المصريين القدماء كانوا يؤمنون بـ (إله واحد) موجود بذاته خالد غير مرئي وهو خالق كل شيء. وسيؤسس المصريون دينهم ولاهوتهم على هذه الفكرة وفي الفصل الثاني يذهب المؤلف إلى أن عبادة أزيريس في مصر كأن سببها أن هذه الديانة تعد اتباعهما بالبعث الأبدية. حتى أنه رأى أن المصريين ظلوا حتى بعد اعتناقهم للمسيحية يخلطون بين صفات إلههم وبين صفات الله القدير. ويستعرض في الفصل الثالث آلهة مصر. وقد بلغت أسماء الكائنات التي تمسى (آلهة) في وقت ما في مصر من الكثرة مبلغاً نحتاج إلى عشرات الصفحات لسردها. وفي الفصل الرابع يعرض المؤلف لعقيدة المصريين في الحساب أو ما يطلق عليه اسم الدنيوية الكبرى إذ تخضع أعمال الإنسان إلى تحليل وتدقيق كم جانب القوى الأهلية بعد الموت. ويختم المؤلف دراسته في الفصل الخامس الذي خصصه لفكرة البعث والخلود التي وردت إشارات كثيرة إليها في أدب المصريين القدماء وكتاباتهم الدينية المختلفة وغيرها.
