يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تعريف نظم المعلومات الجغرافية تعريفاً علمياً شاملاً في خمسة أبواب رئيسية. في الباب الأول يعطي المؤلف صورة واضحة وعميقة عن هذه التقنية حيث وضح أهم أسسها، نشأتها وقواعدها وصعوباتها وتقويمها. وفي الباب الثاني عرض أهم عناصرها وطرق إدخال ومعالجة المعلومات الجغرافية ومقارنتها بالأنظمة الآلية الأخرى.
واهتم المؤلف في الباب الثالث بتوضيح طبيعة مكونات المعلومات الجغرافية والطرق والخطوات المطلوبة لتصميم قاعدة المعلومات. وتطرق في الباب الرابع إلى تعريف بعض التطبيقات الحضرية والبيئية مثل أنظمة الطرق والأراضي والمرافق والتخطيط والبلديات من حيث قاعدة المعلومات والتطبيقات. وأخيراً كان هناك تعريفاً بالطرق المتبعة لتنفيذ هذه الأنظمة ليتمكن القارئ من اختيار الطريقة المناسبة لتنفيذها. وبذلك يصبح على دراية تامة بطبيعة واستخدام هذه التقنية لتفادي بعض المشاكل والخسائر التي تواجه معظم المستخدمين في هذا المجال.
